Laparoscopic Weight Loss Procedure with Dr. Ehab Akkary
Dr. Ehab Akkary is currently starting to work on a new laparoscopic weight loss procedure that might represent a breakthrough in the field. This will lead to one of the first publications in the world about the procedure as well as strong presentation in national and international conferences. If any of the students is interested in working with Dr. Akkary on this project please contact him at your earliest convenience.
The project is studying the Lapband surgery combined with laparoscopic gastric plication. The aim is to prove that this modified technique improves the results and safety of weight loss surgery. The position will be Observer/Researcher

NEW PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
A new academic program agreement has been signed with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey that has openings for up to (7) candidates. The UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) Physician Scientist Skills Program is a one year certificate program for highly qualified doctors from Saudi Arabia. The program will place participants in a medical research lab at New Jersey Medical School to conduct research in areas including (but not limited to):
- Neuroscience
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Infectious Disease
- Inflammation and immunology
Program start date is anticipated to be September 1, 2011, applications are due
by July 30. Participants will gain hands-on experience in a mentored environment
with specialized research equipment through a one year program that is laboratory,
clinical or population based. The Program is specifically designed for rigorous
development of scientific thinking, research methodology and scientific writing
and is highly suited to medical doctors who plan a career in academic medicine.
Participants will attend lectures, seminars, rounds, and other department/school
activities and will complete a research project that results in a poster presentation
and/or publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Located in the city of Newark, New Jersey Medical School is the oldest medical school
in the state. NJMS is one of the eight professional schools of the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the nation’s free standing largest academic
health science university. UMDNJ is ranked in the top 100 research universities
in the U.S. Students at NJMS are exposed to a dynamic basic and translational research

Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship
Objective:
To accept 1-2 candidates interested in a 1 year fellowship in the Department of
Emergency Medicine to coordinate and assist with research activities and educational
activities of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and the Department of Emergency
Medicine at the University of Toledo Medical Center.
Roles and Responsibilities
- To assist medical students and residents in research project development
- Participate in data collection for research activities
- Develop and design research projects in the Department of Emergency Medicine
- Coordinate research activities with other departments within the University of Toledo Medical Center

FELLOWSHIP AIMS
The fellowship is designed for individuals who have completed their general surgery
training and seek to develop a career in endocrine surgery. Fellow will become proficient
in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine surgical problems. Extensive training
on robotic surgery is included in this program, including robotic thyroid, adrenal
and gastrointestinal surgery. Also exposure to transanal endoscopic microsurgery
for rectal carcinoids is provided.
The endocrine fellow would participate in educational conferences, including journal
clubs and Multidisciplinary endocrine tumor board (staffed by endocrine surgery,
otolaryngology, endocrinology, cytopathology, nuclear medicine and radiation oncology).
The fellow is expected to play an active role in the education of medical students.We
will also provide the opportunity for exposure to endocrinology, radiology, pathology/cytology,
and nuclear medicine.
Also, the fellow will have the opportunity to participate in clinical and collaborative
translational research and is expected to present at a national meeting.
Application, Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants must have completed a general surgery residency.
Highlights of the Fellowship The fellow will participate in the following:
-Robotic thyroid surgery.
-Robotic and laparoscopic adrenal surgery.
-Minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid procedures (local anesthesia, videoendoscopic,
radioguided surgery, nerve monitoring)
- Robotic and Laparoscopic adrenalectomy
- Head and neck oncology (neck dissections)
-Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery for Rectal carcinoids.
- Hepatic, pancreas and GI endocrine surgical oncology, including robotic approaches
Office-based procedures:
The fellow should expect to participate in the endocrine surgery clinics 1-2 times
per week. And this will include extensive training in office-based cervical ultrasonography
and U/S guided FNA techniques, as well as fiberoptic laryngoscopy in ENT clinic.
We will also provide the fellow with an opportunity to obtain a basic and advanced
certificate in thyroid/parathyroid ultrasound from the American College of Surgeons
and he is expected to participate as an instructor in Tulane thyroid annual symposium.
2-Clinical Preresidency fellowship in Surgical Oncology:
Applicants must have ECFMG certificate.
The fellow would participate in educational conferences, including journal clubs
and Multidisciplinary tumor boards. The fellow is expected to play an active role
working witht he residents and the medical students.We will also provide the opportunity
for exposure to endocrinology, radiology,pathology/cytology, and nuclear medicine.Also,
the fellow will have the opportunity to participate in clinical and collaborativetranslational

fellows were able to match in a very competative programs after finishing this fellowship.
